Student achievement in Lyon County and all across Kansas is disappointingly low.
According to the Kansas Department of Education, 45% of Lyon County 10th-graders are below grade level in Math; 39% are at grade level but still need remedial training, and only 16% are on track for college and career.
Achievement unfortunately has been declining over the years in Kansas. But not in Florida.
Low-income 4th-graders in Florida have gone from about the worst in the nation in 1998 to the best in the nation now.
Florida’s remarkable turnaround is the subject of a short documentary entitled “Giving Kids a Fighting Chance.”
